We’re delighted to collaborate with our friend, and leading food and drink broadcaster, Nigel Barden. Nigel has been a supporter of Cider Is Wine almost since we began in 2018 and has talked about our producers and their products on Scala Radio, BBC Radio London and Greatest Hits Radio. He managed to elicit the comment ‘Wow!’ from the acclaimed DJ Simon Mayo, with whom he presented on BBC Radio 2 for 12 years.
Nigel’s enthusiasm is inspirational and we look forward to sharing this with you and your friends and families at 7pm on Friday March 11th for one hour of pure entertainment, tasting and food pairing with wonderful wines from apples pears & other fruits. There will be guest appearances from a cheese producer and a cider producer.
*The cheeses have been chosen so as to be widely available from most supermarkets, deli and farm stores – see food pairing notes for this offer on the website.
In case you don’t know: Nigel is also chairman of judges for The Great Taste Awards, Farm Shop & Deli Awards, World Cheese Awards, and the British Cookery School Awards. He also works with Celebrity Chef, Tom Kerridge, and is currently championing artisan food and drink producers in his Britannia Living podcast. During lockdown, footage of ‘Cooking with the Barden Boys’ with Nigel and his 3 sons was posted on Instagram and twitter @NigelBarden. Riestra Sparkling Medium-Dry (Espumosa Semi Secco Cider) 2020
The base cider is created through meticulous selection, starting with the best quality apples, then, after pressing and an initial fermentation, the best ciders to make this Sparkling Medium-Dry cider are transferred into bottles, cider yeasts are added to initiate a secondary in-bottle fermentation. The bottles are left to settle for a minimum of 8 months, resulting in a minimum pressure of 6 atmospheres before carefully disgorging.
Pilton Keeved Cider
Made since 2010, this is Pilton’s original keeved cider produced from fresh bittersweet cider apples which are partially fermented to create a naturally medium cider without sweetening or pasteurisation. Wild yeasts, cold cellars and the low nutrient orchards of Pilton are all key elements in the process – welcome to Somerset, but not as you know it!
*Keeving is an artisan cider-making technique used to create a natural cider without sweetening or pasteurisation. Wild yeasts, cool cellars and low nutrient orchards are all key elements in the process. Only 100% fresh pressed cider apples are used, no sugar, no water, and nothing else.
Welsh Mountain Redstreak 2020
Made mostly from the lovely, soft, bittersweet Somerset Redstreak apple, complemented by the acidic juice and a fresh, highly-scented Brown’s apple. This makes for a perfect for early Spring bottling and a pleasant lower in alcohol cider option.
Once Upon A Tree The Wonder Pear Ice Wine 2016
The juice of handpicked, late harvested Conference and Comice Pears is filtered, frozen and gently thawed to allow the sugars, colour and flavour to be extracted, leaving water behind as ice – a process called cryo-concentration – which concentrates the juice to a potential alcohol of 20–22%.
