TUTORED TASTINGS – FROM 2 TO 20 TO 200…
400 years ago cider used to be called the ‘English Champagne’, and, after a long lull, great cider is on the march again. Cider is Wine is asking drinkers – and wine drinkers in particular – to take a new look at cider and to put aside bad memories of early youth to discover what are sophisticated, elegant and delicious drinks with a rightful place alongside wine.
Cider Is Wine is the quality mark for ciders and perries fermented exclusively from apples and pears – not-from-concentrate – and reflects the growing interest people have in quality and authenticity and the general move to drinking less, but better – very much part of the move to healthier living.
Wine made from grapes must be fermented exclusively from grapes, a requirement that’s embedded in EU law. Yet cider in the UK can be made from just 35% juice, all of which can be from imported concentrate: hardly authentic as consumers want to drink the real deal.
Cider Is Wine defines the sector for real, artisan ciders and perries made from the whole fruit, not-from-concentrate, reflecting where they come from, who produced them, the varietals that made them and the year in which they were harvested.
As well as their 100% not-from-concentrate apple and pear content, all these ciders are naturally lower in alcohol – indeed, on average about half the alcohol of most wines – as well as being gluten-free and, in the vast majority of cases, vegetarian and vegan friendly.
