In its first year of cidermaking, and at its very first public showing in 2019 at The Three Counties Show, Broadway Press won ‘The People’s Cider Champions’ award, followed by the ‘Cider of the Festival’ award at the CAMRA Colchester festival in early 2020.
Broadway Press is all about showcasing the delicious potential of the apples from the Cotswold town of Broadway and the many orchards found in the surrounding area.
Working with Cotswolds Orchards, one of the largest apple growers in the UK, located in the foothills of Broadway Tower, together with a number of other local growers, the cidery unveils the hidden beauty and superb taste of the apples that supermarkets deem ‘Class 2’ simply because they don’t look perfect – but are ideal for making Broadway Press’s superb-tasting cyders.
It’s a win–win–win: the process avoids the apples being treated as food waste and ending up in the bio-digester… whilst the pulp (called scrattings) produced in the cider-making process is used as part of the feed for cattle and pigs at a local farm (the little remaining pulp is turned into ericaceous compost)… and the resulting 100% juice is of course used in an innovative processing method to make the company’s trademark Ice Cyder®.
